Devlog 02 - Prototyping

Introduction

Welcome to our second devlog!

We’ve been creating a local couch co-op game where the goal is to cook together. The catch however is that you’re an octopus and every player controls one tentacle. For various cooking tasks you’ll have to work together while the orders keep coming in. We also want to add features where you can lose lives/arms by accidentally cutting your limbs off and annoy each other by stealing items from each other.

We have decided on creating a ramen restaurant that explores the different types of ramen.

This week the team has been prototyping away. And starting to puzzle everything together.

Prototype

We made a bunch of prototypes! We’ve successfully made the two tentacles move independently. We’ve programmed a pan that simulates cooking by changing the colour of the food when placed on a stove. Additionally our pickup prototype with the tentacles is working and made a functional faucet that can spawn water.

Art

We’ve made some new 3D models with proper polydensity. This allows us to fully see the capabilities of our shader and outlines with all the UVs on a single texture. Further, we completed the blocking out process of our remaining assets, to view them all together.

We started on our art bible and it is nearly finished! In this document we explain the entire art direction of our game.

Environment

We put all our assets we made so far together in one scene, making a kitchen environment where players can prepare a variety of noodles.

The future

In the future we are going to get the gameplay fully up and running. We will try to implement as many features as possible. The next steps are making the dishes, merging the art prototypes into the gameplay prototypes and fleshing out how the controls work.

Thank you for reading!
